Quick review of online backup services

Monday, November 23, 2009backup

My [quick] personal review of the online backup services listed in Lifehackers Five best online backup tools article.

I’m looking for: cheap, encrypted, ~90GB storage, data that won’t change much once uploaded, data rarely downloaded.

Crash Plan:
- Incremental upload (i.e. can be paused), nice UI.
- Personal encryption key
- 4.50$/month

Mozy:
- Ugly interface + horrible upload process (buggy)
- Personal encryption key
- 5.95$/month

Dropbox:
- Very nice, except;
- Too expensive (9.99$/month)
- 50GB limit

Jungle Disk:
- No incremental upload, rough UI.
- Tedious signup with amazon payments
- Personal encryption key
- Provider selection (amazon or rackspace)
- Pay per GB (.15$/GB up, .17$/GB down)

Carbonite:
- Only local hard drive
- Had to google to find uninstall (shame on you)
- 4.58$/month

So I’m going with Crash Plan…

    Hi Che,

I'm sorry you had difficulty uninstalling Carbonite. We do try to make it as easy as possible by including an "Uninstall Carbonite" shortcut within the program's installation folder and using the standard Windows control panel for uninstalling (Add/Remove Programs in XP, Programs and Features in Vista and Windows 7).

If future readers of your blog are having trouble, the instructions are available at http://cp-carbonite.kb.net/article.aspx?article=1154&p=3.

Please let us know if you have any questions as part of your evaluation of the product.

    Sincerely,

    Len Pallazola

    Carbonite, Inc.
